An explanation of the contents of the Kits now follows

During the 1930’s when our Flying Standards were designed, many materials were not yet available, and engineering tolerances were much wider than can be achieved today

One area in which design of our engines suffered was around the rear of the crankshaft where it exited the rear of the engine block. There was no effective oil seal available so reliance was made on a simple principle: If the shaft was exactly central in the end cover, there would only be a small and equal gap all the way round. The cover in which the shaft turned was machined with a spiral pattern. Therefore if the right viscosity oil was employed, when the shaft turned, the spiral would always turn the oil inwards, back into the engine.

Well, that was the 1930s and in our 80 year old cars the oil’s viscocity has diminished and the engines have inevitably worn along the way - and the result is an oil leak, sometimes serious.

The modern practice is to use a suitably sized oil seal in that position. A couple of our Members, sponsored by the Club have done just that.

The objective was to machine away the scroll on the cover, then machine and fit an aluminium insert and sleeve containing a modern lip seal. This seal fits the gap between the cover and the shaft and thus the oil consumption is greatly reduced

Graham Hart, and fellow Club Member Peter Tinsley were able to carry out this work on Graham’s Flying 20 V8. The full illustrated story is available to Members here: tinyurl.com/smcstopoil

Now the good news is that there are only two different size Oil Covers used in our cars. The smaller one is used on the Flying 8, 9 and 10, and the bigger cover is used on the 12,14, 6 cylinder 16 and 20.

The Solution has now been tested using both the bigger and smaller seal, with complete success

The good news is that the end cover can be fitted to the engine without the need to dismantle it, though it is necessary to remove and refit the sump.  A new rear engine plate gasket and sump gasket is needed, If you require these gaskets please choose the appropriate kit.

To understand the full extent of the work, fitting instructions can be downloaded from this link

Please select the kit you need then pay for it. Next, you must send your own cover  to Peter Tinsley at  Riverside, Mill St, St Asaph, Denbighshire LL17 0SP who will supply the kit by return. Please ensure you include your return address
